INTRODUCTION

TENNOZ ART WEEK is an event aimed at bridging the Japanese and international art scenes, and contributing to the invigoration of international cultural tourism by bringing world-class art content to the Tennoz art district and creating a platform for domestic and international art professionals and enthusiasts to gather.

Now in its fourth year, the event will feature "Tennoz Contemporary" at the gallery complex TERRADA ART COMPLEX, an art fair where visitors can explore multiple floors and experience a diverse array of artworks all at once. The lineup also includes open studio programs showcasing the creative spaces of emerging artists, a curated exhibition guest-curated by the contemporary artist Noboru Tsubaki, and art workshops utilizing traditional art materials. In addition to the art exhibitions, the event offers a multifaceted presentation of the current state of Japanese contemporary art through programs that allow visitors to engage directly with the creative process and traditional techniques.

PIGMENT TOKYO ワークショップ「絵絹に花をえがく」

PIGMENT TOKYO Workshop "Painting Flowers on Silk Canvas"

Experience the beauty of silk painting as you paint flowers on traditional silk canvas in this workshop.

Throughout history, artists around the world have created paintings on fabric.

In East Asian art, silk canvas made from silkworm cocoons has long been valued as a painting surface.

This ultra-thin, nearly transparent material allows artists to paint from the reverse side, creating layered effects that are visible from the front. It also enables the expression of delicate, seamless gradations of color, one of silk’s most distinctive characteristics.

Although silk canvases typically require meticulous preparation compared to other substrates, the materials for this workshop will be pre-prepared, allowing you to begin painting right away.

By applying traditional colors to the smooth surface of silk, you will engage with the refined aesthetic sensibilities of Edo-period painters.

※A workshop titled "Preparing Eginu Silk for Painting"—where you can craft the silk substrate used as a base for painting—will be held concurrently. If you wish to continue creating, we encourage you to join this session as well.
